Wrapping the beams

Time to hide all the structural support beams that run through the kitchen and common area.  We found some nice Arkansas Pine (from Texas, no less) that will transition nicely with the Southern Yellow we are using on the wall in the kitchen area and in the ceiling in the entry way.

Damn you Karl Champley!!!

Ever since we started this project I’ve become addicted to shows on DIY, HGTV and Discovery Home.  So addicted, actually, that the words my friend Jim hates hearing coming out of my mouth are “so, I was watching DIY last night”.  Which in myspeak basically means I’ve created more work for us.  Well, this is another prime example – the piece de resistance of creating extra work, if you will.  After working on the trim and case work the past few days we’ve had a lot of excess scrap poplar that I didn’t want to waste.  SO, I took a turn from the aforementioned Mr. Champley’s “Wasted Spaces” show and designed a built in to go behind the front entry door, since that space as it was served absolutely no purpose.  To create some more storage space, and give the house some additional interior architectural details, I designed this built in storage bench with a shaker panel we are going to put some hooks on for jackets and whatnot.  And, to top it all off, I built a cubby above it with a 12″ shelf to give us even more places to put stuff.  In what amounted to my first carpentry project ever I took it slow, but I do have to say I did a pretty damn good job.

It’s starting to look like a house…

Filed under: Bedrooms, Kitchen, Living Room, Mudroom, Trim & Casework — 2500chesterfield @ 9:39 pm

The trim and casework has started in the house and things are really starting to tighten up and look like a house.  All the windows and doors have been trimmed out and the first of the three built in bookcases are up.  With this in progress most of the walls that didn’t get drywall are now covered.  With any luck we’ll be able to finish this place up soon.
