The Living Room & Reading Nook

Filed under: Living Room, On the Market — PJ Mullen @ 10:12 pm

Our approach to designing the living room was to take a very awkward space and turn it into something more cohesive.  We don’t know when this actually happened, but the front porch of the house was framed in and added to the living room area.  While creating a larger space, it also created a very awkward space.  So, we used built-ins in three spots to help shape the space, create storage and give the house some character.

We created a floor to ceiling built in bookshelf on one wall where furniture would have created obstacles.  After crafting a new fireplace mantle out of cedar beams and travertine tile, we designed a two tiered built-in to house home theater components and to provide more storage.  Finally, we installed a bookshelf knee wall to create some separation from the entry way without completely blocking it out, as well as to define the space to allow for better placement of furniture.

Another big aspect of the living room plan was the installation of in the ceiling speakers for the surround sound/whole home audio system.  Behind the TV and on the bottom half of the two tiered built-in are hard wired connections for the surround sound/whole home audio system controls.

Lastly, the separation provided by the bookshelf knee wall allowed us to better define the entryway while allowing us to have a reading nook.  In this space we added a coat closet that was not there previously, as well as a built in bench and coat rack to give some functionality to otherwise dead space.  This area is really highlighted by the extensive use of moulding and features a Southern Yellow Pine tongue and groove ceiling.

Time to do the tiling…

Filed under: Bathrooms, Living Room — 2500chesterfield @ 10:31 pm

I’m not sure if I feel like Fred the baker making the donuts since we’ve been tiling for more than a week already or if I feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day since every morning my day starts with firing up the tile saw.  Either way the house is really starting to take shape with the tile coming together.  Both bathrooms are 90% complete and the kitchen backsplash and entryway are the two largest places left to tile.  Without further adieu, here’s today’s progress:

Damn you Karl Champley!!!

Ever since we started this project I’ve become addicted to shows on DIY, HGTV and Discovery Home.  So addicted, actually, that the words my friend Jim hates hearing coming out of my mouth are “so, I was watching DIY last night”.  Which in myspeak basically means I’ve created more work for us.  Well, this is another prime example – the piece de resistance of creating extra work, if you will.  After working on the trim and case work the past few days we’ve had a lot of excess scrap poplar that I didn’t want to waste.  SO, I took a turn from the aforementioned Mr. Champley’s “Wasted Spaces” show and designed a built in to go behind the front entry door, since that space as it was served absolutely no purpose.  To create some more storage space, and give the house some additional interior architectural details, I designed this built in storage bench with a shaker panel we are going to put some hooks on for jackets and whatnot.  And, to top it all off, I built a cubby above it with a 12″ shelf to give us even more places to put stuff.  In what amounted to my first carpentry project ever I took it slow, but I do have to say I did a pretty damn good job.
